Discovering Salvador: Why Brazil’s Hidden Gem Should Be on Your List

When most people think of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro often comes to mind first—but during my recent trip, Salvador completely stole my heart. Nestled on the northeastern coast of Brazil, Salvador is a city bursting with culture, history, and rhythm, and it has a personality all of its own. From music and dance to food and art, there’s a pulse here that’s impossible not to feel, and it’s what makes Salvador such a special destination. The city’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage is visible everywhere—from its colonial architecture in Pelourinho to its vibrant street music and colorful markets that celebrate life in every form.

Capoeira Lessons: Dance, Fight, and Move Like a Local

One of my favorite experiences in Salvador was taking capoeira lessons. If you’ve never tried it, capoeira is this incredible blend of martial arts, dance, and acrobatics that originated in Brazil with African roots. What makes capoeira so fascinating is that it’s not just about the moves—it’s about the rhythm, the music, and the interplay between participants. During my lesson, I learned the basic ginga (swaying movement), kicks, and evasions, all while keeping pace with live percussion. The instructors shared stories of how capoeira was historically practiced in secret by enslaved people as a form of resistance and community building. It was challenging, fun, and educational—and it gave me a sense of connection to the city’s history that went far beyond a typical workout.

Percussion Workshop: Feeling the Beat of Salvador

Music is the heartbeat of Salvador, and participating in a percussion workshop was a perfect way to feel that energy firsthand. I got to play instruments like the atabaque and agogô, learning the rhythms that drive everything from Carnival parades to street performances. Our instructor was the renowned drummer Maestro Macambira. At one point he toured with Carlos Santana! During the workshop, he explained how each rhythm carries meaning and tells a story—some rhythms even trace back hundreds of years to African traditions. By the end, I was completely immersed in the sound, moving along with the beats, and feeling the city’s energy in a way that’s impossible to capture through words alone. It was hands-on and gave me a new appreciation for Salvador’s musical soul.

Visiting Jorge Amado’s Home

No visit to Salvador is complete without stepping into the world of Jorge Amado, one of Brazil’s most beloved authors. Touring his home offered insight not just into his life, but into the culture, history, and people of Bahia that inspired his writing. The house is charming, filled with personal artifacts, photos, and original manuscripts. I personally fell in love with the study! Amado’s novels often celebrated the liveliness of Salvador, its music, cuisine, and people, and walking through his home gave me a deeper understanding of how the city shaped his storytelling—and how he, in turn, captured the essence of Salvador for the world.

Moqueca, a traditional Bahain seafood stew

Cooking Moqueca: A Taste of Bahia

Food is another reason Salvador is unforgettable. I had the chance to take a cooking class to make moqueca, the traditional Bahian seafood stew made with coconut milk, palm oil, peppers, tomatoes, and fish. The class wasn’t just about following a recipe—it was about understanding the ingredients, the regional variations, and the cultural significance of the dish. The instructor shared stories of family traditions, local markets, and how moqueca represents the fusion of African, Indigenous, and Portuguese influences. Sitting down to eat this dish after learning more about the tradition and seeing the ingredients in the market really created memories for me that went far beyond just the amazing taste of the flavors.

Miguel Santana Theatre: Experiencing Salvador’s Cultural Performance Scene

Salvador’s vibrant arts scene extends far beyond the streets, and an evening at the Miguel Santana Theatre was a highlight. The theater itself is historic, intimate, and beautifully maintained, and attending a live performance there gave me a sense of how deeply Salvador values its cultural expressions. From the music to the choreography to the passion of the performers, the show felt alive, electric, and uniquely connected to the city. Watching the performance made me realize that Salvador isn’t just a destination—it’s a living stage where history, artistry, and community come together every day and night.

Why Salvador Should Be on Your Travel List

What struck me most about Salvador is its authenticity. Unlike more commercialized tourist hubs, this city feels alive in every sense—music, food, dance, and history all collide to create something that’s uniquely Salvadoran. Every experience is rooted in a rich cultural heritage that feels both alive and real. Walking through Pelourinho’s cobblestone streets, listening to street drummers, tasting flavors I’ll never forget, and connecting with the city’s people, I realized that Salvador leaves a lasting impression not just because of what you see, but because of what you feel.

If you are traveling to Salvador for the first time, here are a few tips to help you maximize your time there:

Pelourinho street

  1. Explore Pelourinho Slowly – The historic center is full of colorful colonial buildings, lively squares, and street performers. Take your time wandering the cobblestone streets but be mindful of your surroundings and avoid carrying valuables in crowded areas.

  2. Dress for the Weather – Salvador is warm and humid most of the year. Lightweight, breathable clothing is necessary, and comfortable shoes are a must if you plan to explore on foot.

  3. Experience the Music – Whether it’s live percussion on the street, a samba circle, or a capoeira class, Salvador’s music scene is central to its culture. Don’t be shy—join in, even if you’re a beginner. It’s a good time!

  4. Try Local Foods – Moqueca is a must, but also try acarajé (black-eyed pea fritters), tapioca pancakes, and fresh tropical fruits from local markets.

  5. Learn a Few Portuguese Phrases – While many people in Salvador speak some English, learning simple greetings, thank-yous, and directions in Portuguese will go a long way and will be appreciated by locals. You won’t find English as widely spoken as in some more touristy cities like Rio de Janeiro.

  6. Use Trusted Transportation – Taxis, ride-sharing apps, and hotel transfers are safer options, especially if exploring neighborhoods outside of the main tourist areas.

If you’re looking for a place full of culture, warmth, and rhythm—somewhere that’s lively, historical, and still somewhat undiscovered—Salvador is waiting! Trust me, it’s one of Brazil’s best-kept secrets, and it’s worth experiencing for yourself.
